Rule of 40

Growth and profitability in one number.

Add your revenue growth to your EBITDA margin. Above 40 is healthy. Below it you have to choose: grow faster or make more margin. Investors and CFOs look at this first.

RecurBoard takes both from your P&L in Exact Online. So the Rule of 40 also works if you don't use Subscription Management.

Frequently asked questions about Financials

Does Financials work without Exact Online Subscription Management?

Yes. Financials reads your financial administration in Exact Online. You then see your P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, open items, EBITDA and cash position. For subscription KPIs like MRR and churn you do need Subscription Management.

How up to date are the numbers?

RecurBoard syncs with Exact Online every hour, and you can also start a sync manually. What you book today shows up within the hour.

Does my general ledger need a special setup?

No. RecurBoard classifies your ledger accounts with its own mapping. AI suggests the mapping, which you review and confirm before it's applied. Only for the functional P&L and CAC do you use cost centres in Exact Online.

What do I need for a functional P&L?

Cost centres in Exact Online. RecurBoard shows your costs per cost centre, so you decide the breakdown, for example sales and marketing, product and development, and general and administrative. RecurBoard also uses your marketing and sales cost centres for your CAC.

What is the Rule of 40?

The sum of your revenue growth and your EBITDA margin, both from your P&L. Above 40 a subscription business counts as healthy: you're growing fast, you're profitable, or a healthy mix of both.

Can I see the numbers of several companies together?

Yes. With consolidation you see your P&L, balance sheet, cash flow and open items consolidated across all your administrations, and you can drill down per administration.
